Charlotte-based artist Sala Faruq is featured at RAW: Charlotte presents AXIS. She is showcasing her EcoFab Gourd Art Jewelry and introducing her Afro-Originals® line of eco-friendly products featuring vintage images from the African Diaspora.

 

RAW is an international independent arts organization. It promotes and fosters creativity by showcasing local talent at multi-faceted artistic events in the Australia, Canada, England and the United States. A typical event features a film screening, music performance, fashion show, art gallery, performance art and featured hairstylist and makeup artist.

 

AXIS is to be held at the Neighborhood Theatre, 511 East 36th Street, Charlotte, NC, on Thursday, October 23, 2014. This event is appropriate for all ages. Attire is fashionable. The festivities are from 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm. Tickets are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door.

73rd Annual North Carolina Gourd Festival

Get your gourd on at the 73rd Annual North Carolina Gourd Festival, which is sponsored by the North Carolina Gourd Society (NCGS). The festival will be held in the Holshouser building at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC on September 6th and 7th. The hours are 9:00 am  to 5:00 pm on Saturday and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday. Admission is FREE to NCGS members, children under 16 and workshop participants. All other just $2.00.

Gourd art skull necklace.

With this gourd art necklace, I pay homage to the Latin holiday, Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. Celebrated on November 1st and 2nd each year, this joyous holiday is a time to remember and honor those who have left this life. Typical Dia de los Muertos activities include building altars to the deceased, cleaning and decorating grave sites, special food, parades and parties.

This necklace is made of gourd, brass, plastic flower with rhinestone, leather, acrylic paint and polycrylic sealant; hand fabricated, hand painted and sealed. Measurements: Pendant: 1-7/8 x 1-1/2 x 1/4 inches; Leather cord: 18 inches. Inventory No.: 3633.

EcoFab Gourd Art Jewelry Open Studio

I held my first ever open studio this past Sunday, November 17, 2013. Originally, I was going to have it open to the general public. On further consideration and the suggestion of a friend, I opted for invitation only. And that was the perfect choice. There was a warm quality that only comes from inviting the people you know. It was just lovely. I sold some of my work and I got to make people happy. What is better than that?
